The History

In the summer of 1992, The Erpf Catskill Cultural Center, under the direction of Carol O’Beirne, began the one-month long cultural workshop program titled: Kids in the Kaatskills. Ms. O’Beirne enlisted community residents, area fine and folk artists, folklorists and naturalists to share their interests, skills and life-long experiences living in the Catskills with the youngsters who were part of the diverse community of families who live both full-time and part-time in the region. One of the most supportive of the community leaders was Kathleen Scheider of Fleischmanns and NYC, who had over the years with her husband Edward, been giving of their time and financial support to community projects, specifically those involving children. Once called upon to become actively involved with the Kids in the Kaatskills program, Kaye agreed and became a daily volunteer helping to insure the success of the program.

Expansion to a four-season schedule of programs provided for the additions of programming for teens with a young teen bowling and pizza night and an in-school piano music program in conjunction with professional concert pianist and lecturer, Justin Kolb. This cooperative effort with Mr. Kolb, a Fleischmanns resident, and the schools music teachers continues to this day in Margaretville and now includes Andes and Roxbury Central Schools as well.
